September: A Month to Turn to Mary
The month of September contains many opportunities to honor Our Lady, the humble woman of Nazareth. Some of these memorials in the Church’s liturgical calendar are more hidden than others. As we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8th), the Holy Name of Mary (September 12), and Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15th), we are roused to contemplate several important aspects of Mary’s life.
Her birth, celebrated September 8th, so providentially timed as to occur at the precise moment in perfect preparation for the Messiah’s birth, reminds us that our own life too is a gift of our all-knowing and all-loving God. It is His desire that we live our lives under His loving gaze, just as Mary did.
The Holy Name of Mary when uttered causes the demons to tremble and reassures you and me, Mary’s little children, that we need not fear, as God has all things in the palm of His hand.
On Sept. 15, we relate to Mary’s sorrows. Far from being wasted, our fear, pain, and grief in life, when received with faith the size of a mustard seed, are taken up by the Lord and united with His own suffering for our good and the salvation of souls.
The Marian memorials of September remind us that Mary, born into our common humanity, stands today in the power of God, more powerful than all the powers of evil. She helps us carry our sorrows, showing us that they will not have the last word. At the behest of Holy Mother Church we draw close to Mary and gladly take comfort!
