One of the special blessings of the 2021-2022 academic year at Our Lady of Guadalupe Priory in Georgetown was having Mother Assumpta in residence! The Sisters delighted in introducing her to all things Texan, especially the stunning bluebonnet display in the spring!

The Sisters continued to teach at Holy Family and St. Dominic Savio schools in Austin, as well as at St. Helen School in Georgetown. Four Sisters completed their final year of studies in education and student taught during the spring semester at Holy Family – bringing the total number of Sisters at that school to six for the second half of the school year! In addition, two Sisters residing at the Priory were online students, working towards a degree in theology through the Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Apostolic experiences, especially visits to various schools and youth groups to encourage vocations, were abundant this year. Additionally, the Sisters hosted a Vocations Day for high school and young adult women at the Priory. They were especially happy to welcome students from St. Dominic Savio High School, as well as from Bishop Reicher High School, where our Sisters teach in Waco, TX. The Waco and Georgetown Sisters were also excited to have the opportunity to witness to the sanctity of all human life at the Texas Rally for Life in Austin in January.

Dominican life emphasizes the importance of balance, and so the Sisters found ample opportunities for fun in addition to prayer and work. A trip to the historical San Antonio Missions was the highlight of Thanksgiving break, and in March the Sisters enjoyed attending the Austin Rodeo, including a tour of the barn before the start of the event, courtesy of friends of the community. During spring break, the Sisters were able to spend a day relaxing together at the beach, and they enjoyed watching chicks from Sister Teresa Casey’s classroom hatch during the Easter Triduum (as the chicks had refused to hatch, as scheduled, before the Easter break)!

Another treasured experience of this year in Georgetown was once again hosting Sisters from many of our missions for Christmas break at the Priory. The Sisters are forever grateful to all those who have made this beautiful gathering place a reality! From time with community, to the beautiful liturgies in our own chapel, to the gift of self in the apostolate, it has been a grace-filled year!
